Tea grown in Kenya
In the heart of Kenya’s Nandi Hills, Tumoi Teas is redefining what’s possible from East African tea. This small, farmer-owned cooperative is the vision of Boaz Katah, a local tea maker who grew up among the very fields he now cultivates. Founded in 2013, Tumoi was born out of a desire to break away from the commodity model and bring Kenya’s rich terroir into the spotlight through hand-crafted, high-quality teas.
Tumoi’s gardens flourish at an elevation of 6,700 feet above sea level, where cool mountain air, nutrient-rich volcanic soil, and misty mornings shape every leaf. Nestled in a lush, hilly region right on the equator, this unique location experiences a perfect balance: 12 hours of sunshine and 12 hours of night, year-round. This steady rhythm creates an ideal climate for growing nuanced, vibrant teas that are full of life and flavor.
Here, tradition meets innovation. Tumoi is among the pioneers producing orthodox-style Kenyan teas—such as hand-rolled black, purple, and white varieties—using artisanal techniques rarely seen in the region. Their work has also had a powerful impact locally: supporting rural education, launching women-led herbal cooperatives, and offering literacy and wellness programs for surrounding communities.
